Happy 40th Birthday, Internet!

Wed, Sep 2nd 2009, the ‘Internet’ turned 40 today. It may sound strange that it was only 40 years ago that Internet was born, and today it is impossible to think of a world without the ‘World Wide Web’.
HAPPY 40TH BIRTHDAY
On Sept 2, 1969, around about 20 people gathered in a lab at the University of California, Los Angeles and two bulky computers were used to pass test data through a 15-foot gray cable. That was the beginning of the Internet. Now, 40 years later, we take a look at the Internet timeline.
Key milestones in the development and growth of the Internet:

ie-256x2561969: On September 2, two computers at University of California, Los Angeles, exchange meaningless data in first test of Arpanet, an experimental military network. The first connection between two sites UCLA and the Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, California takes place on October 29, though the network crashes after the first two letters of the word “logon.” UC Santa Barbara and University of Utah later join.
1970: Arpanet gets first East Coast node, at Bolt, Beranek and Newman in Cambridge, Mass.
1972: Ray Tomlinson brings e-mail to the network, choosing “at” symbol as way to specify e-mail addresses belonging to other systems.
1973: Arpanet gets first international nodes, in England and Norway.
1974: Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn develop communications technique called TCP, allowing multiple networks to understand one another, creating a true Internet. Concept later splits into TCP/IP before formal adoption on January 1, 1983.
1983: Domain name system is proposed. Creation of suffixes such as “.com,” ”.gov” and “.edu” comes a year later.
1988: One of the first Internet worms, Morris, cripples thousands of computers.
1989: Quantum Computer Services, now AOL, introduces America Online service for Macintosh and Apple II computers, beginning an expansion that would connect nearly 27 million Americans online by 2002.
1990: Tim Berners-Lee creates the World Wide Web while developing ways to control computers remotely at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
1993: Marc Andreessen and colleagues at University of Illinois create Mosaic, the first Web browser to combine graphics and text on a single page, opening the Web to the world with software that is easy to use.
1994: Andreessen and others on the Mosaic team form a company to develop the first commercial Web browser, Netscape, piquing the interest of Microsoft Corp. and other developers who would tap the Web’s commerce potential. Two immigration lawyers introduce the world to spam, advertising their green card lottery services.
1995: Amazon.com Inc. opens its virtual doors.
1996: Passage of US law curbing pornography online. Although key provisions are later struck down as unconstitutional, one that remains protects online services from liability for their users’ conduct, allowing information and misinformation to thrive.
1998: Google Inc. forms out of a project that began in Stanford dorm rooms. US government delegates oversight of domain name policies to Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN. Justice Department and 20 states sue Microsoft, accusing the maker of the ubiquitous Windows operating system of abusing its market power to thwart competition from Netscape and others.
1999: Napster popularizes music file-sharing and spawns successors that have permanently changed the recording industry. World Internet population surpasses 250 million.
2000: The dot-com boom of the 1990s becomes a bust as technology companies slide. Amazon.com, eBay and other sites are crippled in one of the first widespread uses of the denial-of-service attack, which floods a site with so much bogus traffic that legitimate users cannot visit.
2002: World Internet population surpasses 500 million.
2006: World Internet population surpasses 1 billion.
2008: World Internet population surpasses 1.5 billion. China’s Internet population reaches 250 million, surpassing the United States as the world’s largest. Netscape’s developers pull the plug on the pioneer browser, though an offshoot, Firefox, remains strong. Major airlines intensify deployment of Internet service on flights.

Somali man, 112, marries 17-year-old girl

A crowd of hundreds attended the wedding between Ahmed Muhamed Dore and Safia Abdulleh in Guriceel, in the Galguduud region of Somalia. Mr Dore said: "Today God helped me realise my dream."
Mr Dore and his teenage bride are from the same village, and he said that he had waited for her to grow up before proposing.

He said: "I didn't force her, but used my experience to convince her of my love, and then we agreed to marry."
The bride’s family said she was "happy with her new husband".
At 95 years older than her – if his claimed age is accurate – he is old enough to be her great-great-great-grandfather.
He already has 18 children by his other five wives.
According to Somali historians, the wedding is the first of its kind in Somalia for over a century.

Nanos catching fire, Tata may order inspection

Tata Nano’s worries don’t seem to end. At first it was the issue of Nanos being seen as a looming threat to the already congested Indian roads. Then the safety concern came along which the car dealt with quite efficiently by passing the crash test. But now Tata and its ambitious small car have a new fiery problem to take care of. During the previous month a total of three Nanos have been reported to have caught fire. The cases were reported in Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Delhi.

Ravindra Bhagat from Ahmedabad whose car caught fire is now of the opinion that a bigger car is safer and better than Nano. Sunil Kumar Panwanda who had bought the small car for his children is shocked after the car caught fire almost three hours after his daughter parked it outside their home.

Tata has responded promptly to the issue and may initiate a full scale inspection of all the Nano cars sold till date.  That adds up to a total of 7.500 cars. But the company has commented on the incidents as one-off cases and has reassured that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the design or technology of the car.

Mahindra Satyam may relieve 5,000 employees

Just when the Indian IT industry is picking itself up after the double lightning strikes – recession and the Satyam scandal – one more bad news has struck. Barely months after assuring that there won’t be any more layoffs, the management of Mahindra Satyam has sent a two-month notice to many of its employees of the Virtual Pool Program. As per the Times of India report, the laid off employees of Mahindra Satyam received the following mail.

"In our earlier communication dated June 11, 2009, you were placed on VPP for a period of six months and accordingly, your Virtual Pool Leave is due to end on December 18, 2009. It is rather unfortunate that due to the continued economic constraints and business outlook, we do not anticipate that we will have the ability to recall many of our valued associates within the VPP period."

The Virtual Pool program was started on June 11 with almost 8,000 associates as part of it with basic salary, PF and medical insurance. But the six month program concludes in December and almost 5,000 associates will not be retained by the company. The company is helpless in the matter as there aren’t enough projects to justify the headcount.

Mahindra Satyam’s official stand states that it has absorbed around 1,500 associates from the program but went on to deny that the company wasn’t dismissing associates.

War games hint at stronger Indo-US relations

India and the US are currently engaged in an enormous joint military exercise with the active participation of the soldiers and machinery from both sides. The unsettled South Asian scenario has made it necessary for the US to have a strong ally in the region. India has proved to be a dependable ally provided the relationship is mutually beneficial.

The US is concerned about the murky state of affairs in Afghanistan and India is more worried about Pakistan harbouring terrorists. Both nations share a common problem in the form of China. The US has plans to keep a check on China as well via a stronger relationship with India. India too is in need of a strong support to keep China at bay and to deal with the
neighbour in case of a brawl.

The primary aim of the joint military exercise is to prepare the soldier for the worst situation that can arise in the region. As per the pact signed in the month of July, India has permitted the entry of military aircraft manufacturers Lockheed and Boeing into the Indian defense market. The war game will also function as a testing stage for the Indian officials to assess US weaponry prior to ordering the same.

The program was initiated after the suicide bombing on the Indian embassy in Kabul. The attack took the lives of 17 people.

Sachin helps eBay India make Rs. 1.2 million sale

Sachin-Tendulkar-oct14The online auction phenomenon reached new heights due to one site – eBay. The popularity of the site has led to the launch of its territory-specific editions across the globe. EBay India has been around for a while, but hadn’t actually been as huge a hit as the real one. But things have changed for the good recently as eBay India has achieved its biggest sale so far (single sale for Rs. 1.2 million), with a little help from a gentleman named Sachin Tendulkar.

The batting maestro had placed a private coaching camp for auction on eBay. The highest bidder will get the opportunity to learn the tricks and tactics of cricket from Sachin himself. The earnings will go to Apnalaya charity, a charity firm which helps slum children. The auction was so intensely fought that it tied up with two bidders, each placing Rs. 600,000 on the table. Eventually the camp was offered to both of them with the combined camp fee of Rs. 1.2 million.

One of the bidders is from Whirlpool India, New Delhi while the other is a philanthropist from Mumbai.

Now what do the winners get for all that money?

The camp could take place on any day from October 2009 to March 2010 on any cricket ground in India. Winners will be given the details of the venue 30 days prior to the date of the camp. The winner could bring 14 persons along or come alone. The training will include batting techniques, inputs on fitness, practice routines to follow, developing match readiness and psychological training. The camp will be on a morning to noon schedule and will be followed by a photo shoot and lunch.
Is it a value for money package? We’ll never know, but can make an educated guess that it’s the admiration for the legendary batsman and the added bonuses of fame and charity associated with the whole idea which drove these two bidders to shell out the cash.

Acid Factory tanks

Sanjay Gupta’s action thriller Acid Factory has officially tanked at the box office. The opening weekend collections are

so dismal with attendance in the range of 30-40%. The slick action and the suspense element haven’t found much

interest among the moviegoers who have reserved their excitement for the Diwali big movies. The crowd-pulling

capacity of the cast being pretty low, we are not much surprised. But the intensive promotional activities have found no

response at all. That’s something which has shocked us and the makers of the movie.

7 Tricks to Get a Google of Links

SEO is a race. And in any race learning from your competitors makes you a better runner. Even when you're running first it's sometimes good to look back and check the runner-ups. And if you're not the yellow jersey guy, you absolutely should examine the leaders: their gear, their training, their strategy. In SEO the most interesting thing about your competition are their links.

Whether you like it or not SEO is still pretty much about links. Good link profile can make up for almost any lack of optimized content and other onpage flaws. Love or hate, the best thing you can do about it is embrace the fact and run with it.

So let's go through some tricks that will enable you to look deeper into your competition's link profile granting you access to the restricted areas: their locker room, dirty laundry and even the briefing hall where they plan their link building strategies.
[Track Your Keyword Rank History on Google, Yahoo and Bing!]

Let's Talk Competitive Link Research

Finding out where your competitors' links come from is not all that hard. You just go to Yahoo! or Google and type in link:www.your-competitor.com to get a list of inbound links to the site.

Yahoo's much better in that respect as it tends to give more extensive and accurate data. The problem here is that there's a limit of 1,000 links per website which is often not enough as the fattest link sources get left behind the limit fence. Here're some tips to break through to the other side.

Note: If you're lazy like me skip to the end of the article where I'll share a tool that does it all much quicker.

Trick 1: Search for Links to Particular Web Pages of a Competing Site

Alongside with link:www.your-competitor.com search for

link:www.your-competitor.com/products.html or
link:www.your-competitor.com/services.html

and so on.

Trick 2: Exclude Internal Links

You may examine the internal linking structure of your competition if you want to gain some insight on their navigation and marketing steps. But as we want to find more external links, let's exclude the internal ones.

You can do this by adding -site:site.com operator to your search query. Type in:

link:http://www.your-competitor.com -site:your-competitor.com or
linkdomain:www.your-competitor.com -site:your-competitor.com

and you'll get a list of external backlinks only.

There's a dropdown option in Yahoo! site explorer that does the same.

Trick 3: Exclude Links Coming from Certain Domains

The -site: modifier lets you exclude links coming from specific sites. So, whenever you see a large chunk of links coming from the same domain add -site:thisdomain.com modifier to your query and the links from this site will get replaced with new ones.
Top Positions in the Web's Largest Article Directory

You can add -site: multiple times in one query so that you have something like this:

link:http://www.cnn.com -site:cnn.com -site:en.wikipedia.org

Trick 4: Check Links Coming from Certain TLDs

This is a little known trick. The site: modifier actually lets you get a list of links coming from domains with certain TLDs: .com, .org, .edu, .co.uk and so on. Just type in

link:http://www.your-competitor.com site:.gov or
linkdomain:www.your-competitor.com site:.gov

and you'll get a list of .gov sites linking to your rival.

Note: Do this in Yahoo! regular search, not site explorer

Trick 5: Exclude Links Coming from Certain TLDs

This is an even lesser known trick. You can exclude certain TLDs from the results with the -site:.tld modifier. Usually the biggest chunk of links comes from .com's so add a -site.com modifier and you'll get lots of new link data.
[Forget Expensive PPC Advertising - There is an Alternative!]

Trick 6: Use Different Combinations of the First 5 Tricks

Try link:http://www.your-competitor.com/page.html -site:your-competitor.com -site:.com
Or link:http://www.your-competitor.com site:.org -site:wikipedia.org

Give it a thought and I'm sure you'll come up with lots of ideas. Feel free to share your findings in the comments.

Trick 7: Use the Above 6 Tricks in Different Search Engines

Don't limit your searches to Yahoo! and Google, go to AltaVista, Alexa, (Bing doesn't give you link data, so forget about it) but then there're Exalead, Excite and tons of regional search engines. Search them, get rid of the the duplicates and you'll have a goooooooooooooooogol of competitor's links to study.

Note: Some search engines have a different set of operators so you'll need to type domain: instead of link:.

Getting It All Done Fast

This sure seems like a lot of work and it is. Moreover, getting the links list is only the beginning and the easy part of competitive link research. Once you get the list you need to analyze each link, weed out poor quality sites and only leave the ones you can get a link from. Now THAT's a lot of work.

I'm too lazy to do this all by hand, besides I value my time too much to waste it on such kind of work. That's why I use SEO SpyGlass an advanced link analysis tool that employs all the tricks described in this article (plus some more advanced ones I don't even know) to get up to 25,000 links per domain, which is much, much more than any other tool can get.

SEO SpyGlass also finds all the data I need to analyze the links:

    • Google PR of the domain and linking page
    • The URL and title of the linking page
    • The anchor text and description
    • Whether the link is still on the page (sometimes the link gets removed but search engines will
think it's there till they reindex the page).
    • Whether the link is no-follow or dofollow
    • How many other links are on the page
    • How much link value the link passes
    • And some other data like TLDs, domain age, country, etc.

If you want to do competitive link research seriously, I'd strongly recommend trying SEO SpyGlass out. And of course you can always use my tricks whenever you want to run a quick background check on that new guy on your block.

Pazhassi Raja is now tax free

Pazhassi Raja’s filmmakers had asked the government for a hike in the ticket prices. Even though the government didn’t pay any attention to their demand at first, they have now decided to give a 50 percent tax exemption on the ticket prices. Movie lovers are overjoyed with the news as they have to pay lesser money now to watch the film. The movie is scheduled to release on today 16th October 2009.

THE VALUE OF SMILE

A Smile costs nothing, but gives much. It enriches those who receive, without making poorer those who give.
It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.
None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it,and none is so poor, but that he can be made rich by it. A Smile creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in business, and is the countersign of friendship. It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and it is nature's best antidote for trouble.
Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone, until it is given away.
Some people are too tired to give you a smile; Give them one of yours, as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.

"THINK on THESE THINGS"

The most important faith will be the way you feel about it within you.
Don't ever let anyone tell you that it is too unsophisticated to think about such things.
For it is the very basis on which you draw your breath. Without faith there's no hope.

The most beautiful thing about life is that we can begin it anew each day.

We need to forget every unpleasant thing that has ever happened to us,
every shallow thing that has no meaning, every unkind word or deed or
thought and start all over again.

And the only possible way to do it is by faith.
Faith. Faith in yourself, faith in others, faith in God, and faith
that right will win.

And facetiously stated, "Them that has, gits."

If you have a little faith it will attract more ~
if you know about it within you.

Google SideWiki Encourages Public Graffiti on Any Site

Google has launched a controversial new tool that allows the public to comment on any web site in a side bar displayed in their browser.

Called Google Sidewiki, the tool is integrated in the latest version of Google Toolbar and works with both Firefox and Internet Explorer but ironically, not yet Google Chrome. To use Sidewiki, download the latest version of the Google Toolbar and set it to enhanced.

When activated, Sidewiki slides across from the left and becomes a browser sidebar, where you can write entries in a vertical column and read the entries of others. To activate Sidewiki, you simply click on the Sidewiki button in your Toolbar menu or the little talk bubble on the left hand side of your screen.

See: http://www.sitepronews.com/images2/sidewiki.jpg

If you've got a Google profile, your image will appear next to your Sidewiki entry. You can either highlight a certain part of a web page, click the Sidewiki button and comment about it, or you can make a general comment about the entire web page. If you've got Sidewiki installed, you can see comments made on the same web site by other members of the public and you can forward your Sidewiki comments to colleagues, friends and family via direct link, email, Twitter or Facebook.

It appears that persons can read the Sidewiki comments sent via link whether they have Sidewiki installed or not. When you're logged into Sidewiki, you'll always see your comments at the top and any others below.

Not only does your Sidewiki entry appear on the original page, but if you have highlighted text, your entry also appears on any webpages that contain the same snippet of text that your comment is about. From the official blog post:

"Under the hood, we have even more technology that will take your entry about the current page and show it next to webpages that contain the same snippet of text. For example, an entry on a speech by President Obama will appear on all webpages that include the same quote. We also bring in relevant posts from blogs and other sources that talk about the current page so that you can discover their insights more easily, right next to the page they refer to."

Rather than viewing them in the order in which they were written, Sidewiki entries are ranked via an algorithm determined by Google:

"So instead of displaying the most recent entries first, we rank Sidewiki entries using an algorithm that promotes the most useful, high-quality entries. It takes into account feedback from you and other users, previous entries made by the same author and many other signals we developed."

The technology used to determine ranking involves large-scale graph computing but other factors are at play, as revealed by Danny Sullivan in his post about Sidewiki. These include use of sophisticated language, complex sentences and ideas, user reputation and user history as revealed by your Google profile and comment contributions. Your comments and others can be thumbed up or down using the "useful - yes or no?" tool, or reported as abuse, further contributing to your user reputation and "Profile Rank" as Danny calls it.

Google have also launched an API that allows developers to work freely with the content created in Sidewiki. Where no comments have been made on a web page, Google may show blog results relating to that page.

The potential applications of Sidewiki are interesting and frightening at the same time. For example, I can see how it could be a useful bookmarking tool, allowing you to make notes about a web site you've found which you could refer to later. You can even embed YouTube videos in Sidewiki (take a look at the Google home page to see this in action).

It also has fantastic potential as an online collaboration tool, letting you annotate the pages on a site in conjunction with team members in a similar way to tracking changes in a MS Word document and sharing document versions via Google Docs.

BUT, (and it's a big but), I can see Sidewiki being open to abuse in a similar way to Searchwiki, Google's comment tool for search engine result pages. Searchwiki has been widely panned in the search industry because it's Notes feature has been exploited by spammers, overactive PR companies and people with a chip on their shoulder about certain web brands. Unfortunately, I see Sidewiki heading in the same direction. And fast.

Any user controlled element of a search engine is open to some level of abuse. But I don't see a huge amount of comment filtering going on yet and have already seen evidence of spamming (view the Microsoft home page with Sidewiki installed and you'll see anti-MS entries like this one).

Yes Google have a usefulness rating system in place, a Report Abuse link and are flagging some comments with the disclaímer "These entries may be less useful" but I doubt their filters will be able to keep up as Sidewiki takes off. There's also going to be the troll factor which will undoubtedly lead to the system becoming worthless if it's not carefully controlled. I've viewed Sidewiki entries on some major sites this past week and it's already starting to feel like Toilet Wall Graffiti 2.0.

Sidewiki has program policies but spammers don't care about those and trolls don't read them. Besides, one man's graffiti is another man's gospel.

Google's catch phrase for Sidewiki is: "Contribute helpful information to any web page". To that, I say: Define helpful.

Hollywood or Bollywood – Blue is the movie to watch this month

Given its multi-starrer status and sky-high budget, Blue has been in the limelight for quite some time. The excitement is rising with each day and for one reason or the other, the press is treated to some of the best news that movie lovers will love to hear. The latest news on Blue is from the Hollywood side and the names which are associated with the news will blow you away, literally.
Hollywood cinematographers Amir Mokri and Mitchell Amundsen have shown a keen interest in Bollywood’s most stylized action-flick ever and will be treated to a special screening of Blue. Amir Mokri has shot high voltage action flicks like Vantage Point, Bad Boys 2 and Fast & Furious while Mitchell Amundsen wielded the camera for Tom Cruise’s third Mission Impossible movie. Now the truly “awesome” surprise – Michael Bay, director of Transformers movies may also drop by for the screening of Blue at Warner Brothers Studios in LA. The mixing of Blue is also conducted at Warner Brothers Studios and that earns it the distinction of the first Bollywood movie to be mixed there.

Blue’s director Anthony D’Souza is a huge fan of Michael Bay who is synonymous with stylish explosive action. Blue is clearly inspired by Bay’s film making style as it is evident from the racy and adrenaline pumping trailers.

Anthony D’Souza is beaming because of all the attention Blue is receiving. He says, "I've been a Michael Bay fan right from the time he made the Aaron Burr commercial. He's definitely my favourite director. Blue bears Bay's stamp. I had decided I'd show it to him when it was ready.”

We hope Michael Bay does find the time to check out his admirer’s work.

The star cast of Blue comprises of Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, Zayed Khan, Lara Dutta and Katrina Kaif. Kylie Minogue makes a special appearance in the movie and has performed in a promotional video. Blue is considered as the most technically superlative movie of recent times. The crew, equipment and film making techniques which went into creating Blue are of Hollywood class. The action and visual effects have been supervised by James Bomalick whose track record includes Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Die Hard 4.0 and Bad Boys 2. Pete Zuccarini who has worked as Underwater Director of Photography for Terminator Salvation, Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Jumper among many others, has taken up the same role for Blue. The music and score has been composed by A.R Rahman with sound design from Resul Pookutty (Need we say, both are Oscar winners?). Shot extensively in the Bahamas and Bangkok, with every ingredient that an action movie lover can ask for, this high octane under-water thriller will surface on October 16. Fasten your seatbelts and brace yourself for the thrill ride.
