Intel to Boost Netbooks' Atomic Power

Intel unveiled new additions to its line of Atom processors, a set of chips designed for ultra-small notebook computers and entry-level desktops. The new products integrate graphics processors and memory controllers into the CPUs, and a dual-core Atom chip is included in the lineup. The processors should make their way into computers from several vendors available early next year.



Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) unveiled several new Atom processors on Monday. The chips are smaller and more energy-efficient than their predecessors. They also integrate graphics processors (GPUs) and memory controllers into the CPUs.


Two of them are single-core processors and the third is a dual-core CPU. All run at 1.66 GHz. Computers based on these new processors will be available Jan. 4, 2010.




Shrinking the Atom


Intel's new line of Atom processors consists of products for netbooks and entry-level desktop PCs. For netbooks, Intel unveiled the N450 processor. For desktop PCs, Intel announced the D410 and the D510, the only dual-core processor in the latest lineup. All three are paired with the new low-power NM10 Express Chipset, which was also announced on Monday.


Intel claims the integration of memory controllers and graphics into the CPU in the new line of Atom processors is an industry first on x86 chips. This means the processors now consist of a CPU and a chipset. They don't need an input/output controller hub like older-generation chips did.


The N450 offers a 20 percent improvement in average power consumption, Intel said. The integration has cut the total footprint for the netbook platform by about 60 percent, according to the company. For entry-level desktop PCs based on the new Intel Atoms, the reduction is about 70 percent.


The Nitty-Gritty Tech Info


The N450 is a single-core processor with 512 KB of L2 cache and a 7-watt total kit TDP, including the chipset. TDP stands for "thermal design power." It's the maximum amount of power a chip will draw when running real applications and represents the maximum amount of power the cooling system in a computer has to dissipate.


The D410 is a single-core Atom processor for entry-level desktop PCs. It has 512 KB of L2 cache and 12 watts of total kit TDP, including the chipset. The D510 is the only dual-core processor unveiled on Monday. It's for entry-level desktop PCs and has 1 MB of L2 cache. It has a 15-watt total kit TDP, including the chipset.


All three processors run at 1.66 MHz. Pricing and availability will be announced in January.


The smaller processors with their lower power consumption rates may make for new, super-small fanless and all-in-one desktops, Intel spokesperson Bill Calder said..


Battling the Competition


Asus, Acer, Lenovo, Dell (Nasdaq: DELL), Toshiba, Samsung and Fujitsu are among the vendors coming out with products based on the new Atom line, Intel said. Most of the new systems will run on Windows 7 Starter or Windows 7 Home Basic, but some vendors will offer Moblin Linux v2, Intel's version of Linux, as well.


The netbook line is expected to be very hot -- Gartner (NYSE: IT) predicts that worldwide PC shipments will grow, driven by increasing mobile PC shipments. This year, mobile PC shipments will probably hit 162 million units, and in 2010, they are expected to total more than 196 million units, Gartner forecast.


That has led to expectations of strong sales , which in turn are pulling chip vendors into the market for mobile computing chips. This could cause Intel a headache. "The big problem for Intel is ARM (Nasdaq: ARMHY) and the massed number of companies, ranging from Marvell and Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) to Nvidia (Nasdaq: NVDA) and Freescale, that are suddenly focused on this emerging segment of small personal products," Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told TechNewsWorld.


Many of these vendors have a strong presence in the GPU side of the business, which seems to be gaining ground at the CPU's expense, Enderle pointed out. For example, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Department of Energy's largest science and energy lab, plans to build a new supercomputer based on the next-generation "Fermi" CUDA graphics processing unit Nvidia announced recently.


Intel's traditional weakness in the graphics sector is going to hurt it in the battle for GPU dominance, Enderle said. "While Intel's much larger and more powerful than AMD (NYSE: AMD) or Nvidia, and has the x86 base behind it, it's much weaker, comparatively, in this battle than it is on the regular PC platform," he explained. "There is a much more even playing field here."


For example, Intel recently had to put its plans for its Larrabee graphics processor on hold indefinitely, just one month after setting a new processing speed record with that chip. Intel now plans to use Larrabee technology as a software development platform for internal and external use in high-performance computing.


However, Intel's new Atom line is a different kettle of fish, company spokesperson Calder pointed out. "Larrabee was an entirely different focus, which is discrete graphics," he told TechNewsWorld. "With this segment, we've integrated graphics directly into the CPU. That's not anything like Larrabee."


The competition does not pose much of a threat, Calder said. "We have a year-and-a-half lead in sales of silicon for netbooks," he said. "We've heard a lot about various competing designs, but today you can't buy anything in terms of significant numbers from other suppliers."


Footfalls of the FTC


Intel's integration of GPUs into CPUs in its new Atom line is being dogged by questions about the lawsuit filed recently by the FTC against Intel alleging anticompetitive behavior.


Could this pending lawsuit impact sales of the new Atom chips? Intel doesn't think so. "The integration of graphics and memory controllers into the CPU is a function of Moore's law," Calder explained. "As we continue to shrink transistors and the overall real estate of silicon, we're able to put more and more features on the chips themselves. That's what we do as a company -- we innovate and integrate."


However, analyst Enderle contends the FTC lawsuit could still be a thorn in Intel's side. "Much like Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) was forced to change behavior by the European Commission, Intel could be forced to open up its technology more by the FTC," he said. "It will be a very interesting year in 2010 for Intel, but not necessarily in the best possible way."

"Avatar" could indeed light the way to fresh, uncharted territory for filmmaking and entertainment thanks to its groundbreaking special effects and 3-D technologies -- but that's not necessarily a good thing.

The best way to explain that is to go see writer-director James Cameron's new blockbuster in a 3-D IMAX theater. (Before you scream "Duh!" at your PC, hear me out). As you settle down with your popcorn and drink to watch this 160-minute adventure, pay close attention to the 3-D previews of other movies vying for your leisure-time dollars next year. In the IMAX theater I was in for a midnight Thursday screening of "Avatar," I was treated to a massive, grinning Cheshire Cat head that appeared to float inches from my face, thanks to director Tim Burton's revisionist version of "Alice In Wonderland."
Dreamworks' idea of a scary-yet-cute dragon flew right at me in the studio's trailer for "How to Train Your Dragon." And of course, the lovable and hygiene-challenged ogre Shrek is back in "Shrek Forever After," and there he was towering over me in all his green glory.
The point bludgeoned into me during these trailers was that 3-D was going to be used for 3-D's sake in all three films. Objects and characters are going to be shot at the audience as they have been since "Bwana Devil," "House of Wax" and the dawn of 3-D in the 1950s. The only exception was a preview for a new IMAX documentary, "Hubble 3-D;" an image of the space telescope appearing to stretch out into the movie theater from the screen, with Earth in the background, was truly breathtaking.

KOTTAYAM: Dr K Sree Krishna Kumar, Director, School of Technology and Applied Sciences (STAS), Mahatma Gandhi University, has been appointed the Director of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Dr Sree Krishna Kumar, who has 17 years of post graduate teaching experience and 11 years of administrative experience by vide of positions held in the LBS, IHRDE and M G University, has been appointed in the AICTE on deputation basis. The 45-year-old Sreekrishna Kumar is the youngest and is the only Malayalee to adorn the top post in the national body till date.

AICTE has wide ranging powers in the control and curriculum formation for technical education in the country.

A native of Chettikulangara, Mavelikkara, SreeKrishna Kumar is the son of retired teachers’ N Krishnan Nair and K Janaki Amma. His wife Dr M S Latha is a lecturer in the SN College, Chengannur.

കേരളത്തിലാണ് മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര്‍ ഡാം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നതെങ്കിലും തമിഴ്നാടാണ് ഡാമിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥര്‍ . അക്കഥകളൊക്കെ പറയാന്‍ പോയാല്‍ മണ്ടത്തരങ്ങളുടെ സര്‍ദാര്‍ജിക്കഥ പരമ്പര പോലെ കേട്ടിരുന്ന് ചിരിക്കാനുള്ള വകയുണ്ട്.

ഇതെല്ലാം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും അവശേഷിക്കുന്ന മലയാളിയും, തമിഴനും, ഈ ദാരുണസംഭവത്തിന്റെ പഴി അങ്ങോട്ടും ഇങ്ങോട്ടും, ചാരി, വീണ്ടും കാലം കഴിക്കും. ഒരു രാജാവിന് പറ്റിയ അബദ്ധം നാളിത്ര കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും തിരുത്താനാകാതെ പ്രജകളെ പരിപാലിക്കുന്നെന്ന പേരില്‍ നികുതിപ്പണം തിന്നുകുടിച്ച് സുഖിച്ച് കഴിഞ്ഞുപോകുന്ന മന്ത്രിമാരേയും അവരുടെ പിണിയാളുകളേയും നാമൊക്കെ പിന്നെയും പിന്നെയും വന്‍ ഭൂരിപക്ഷത്തിന് തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത് തലസ്ഥാനത്തേക്കും കേന്ദ്രത്തിലേക്കും അയച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കും. ആ രാഷ്ടീയവിഷജീവികളൊക്കെയും ഇടതും, വലതും, കളിച്ചു്‌, വീണ്ടും വീണ്ടും, മാറി മാറി മലയാളസമൂഹത്തെയൊന്നാകെ കൊള്ളയടിക്കും.

1979 ആഗസ്റ്റ് 11ന് കനത്ത മഴയില്‍ ഗുജറാത്തിലെ മോര്‍വി ഡാം തകര്‍ന്നപ്പോള്‍ ഉണ്ടായതാണ് സ്വതന്ത്ര ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഡാം ദുരന്തം. 20 മിനിറ്റിനകം 15,000ത്തോളം ജനങ്ങളാണ് അന്ന് മോര്‍വി പട്ടണത്തില്‍ മണ്ണോട് ചേര്‍ന്നത്.

രണ്ടാഴ്ച്ച മുന്‍പ് അതിശക്തമായ മഴകാരണം തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലെ ആളിയാര്‍ ഡാം തുറന്ന് വിട്ടപ്പോള്‍ പാലക്കാട്ടെ മൂലത്തറ റെഗുലേറ്റര്‍ തകര്‍ന്ന് വിലപ്പെട്ട മനുഷ്യജീവനൊപ്പം 50 കോടിയില്‍പ്പരം രൂപയുടെ നാശന‍ഷ്ടങ്ങളാണുണ്ടായത്.

2006 ആഗസ്റ്റില്‍ കനത്തമഴകാരണം രാജസ്ഥാനിലെ ബജാജ് സാഗര്‍ ഡാമിലെ അധിക ജലം തുറന്ന് വിട്ടപ്പോള്‍ ഉണ്ടായ ദുരന്തത്തിന്റെ ബാക്കിപത്രങ്ങള്‍ കുറേനാളുകള്‍ക്ക് ശേഷമാണെങ്കിലും നേരില്‍ കാണാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുള്ള ഒരാളാണ് ഞാന്‍. അവിടെ പലയിടത്തും വെള്ളം ഇരച്ചുകയറിയതു്‌ രാത്രിയായതുകൊണ്ടു്‌ ഗ്രാമവാസികളില്‍ പലരും ഉറക്കത്തില്‍ത്തന്നെ മുങ്ങിമരിച്ചു. നൂറുകണക്കിനു്‌ കന്നുകാലികളും, മിണ്ടാപ്രാണികളും ചത്തൊടുങ്ങി. ഭൂപ്രകൃതിയിലുള്ള പ്രത്യേകത കാരണം മാസങ്ങളോളം ഈ വെള്ളം താഴ്ന്ന പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ കെട്ടിക്കിടന്നു്‌ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുണ്ടാക്കി.തൊട്ടടുത്ത സംസ്ഥാനമായ ഗുജറാത്തിലും ഈ ഡാമില്‍ നിന്നൊഴുകിയ വെള്ളം ഒരുപാടു്‌ നാശങ്ങള്‍ വിതച്ചു. ഗുജറാത്തിലെ രക്ഷാപ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളില്‍ പങ്കെടുത്ത മുന്‍സൈനികനും ഹെലിക്കോപ്റ്റര്‍ പൈലറ്റുമായ എന്റെ അമ്മാവന്‍ ക്യാപ്റ്റന്‍ മോഹന്റെ അടുക്കല്‍ നിന്ന് ആ ദുരന്തത്തിന്റെ മറ്റൊരു ഭീകരമുഖം മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും എനിക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ഇതൊക്കെക്കൊണ്ടാകാം 2 കൊല്ലത്തിലധികമായി, എന്നും മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാറിനെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള വാര്‍ത്തകള്‍ക്ക് ഞാന്‍ കാതോര്‍ക്കുന്നത് ഒരു ഉള്‍ക്കിടിലത്തോടെ മാത്രമാണ്.

മനുഷ്യത്ത്വം എന്നത് അധികാ‍രക്കസേരകളില്‍ ഇരിക്കുന്ന മഹാന്മാര്‍ക്കൊക്കെ നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടുകഴിഞ്ഞോ ? അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെ ആയുസ്സിന്റെ 20 ഇരട്ടിയേക്കാളധികം കാലത്തേക്ക് അതില്‍ നിന്ന് അയല്‍ സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന് വെള്ളം കൊടുക്കാമെന്നുള്ള കരാറിന് കൂട്ടുനിന്ന രാജാവിനും, (രാജാവിനെ സായിപ്പ് നിര്‍ബന്ധിപ്പിച്ച് സമ്മതിപ്പിച്ചതാണെന്നുള്ളത് വിസ്മരിക്കുന്നില്ല.) ആ കരാര്‍പ്രകാരം ഇനിയും മുന്നോട്ട് പോയാല്‍ ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് പ്രജകള്‍ ചത്തടിയുമെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കിയിട്ടും രാഷ്ട്രീയം കളിക്കുന്ന മന്ത്രിമാര്‍ക്കും, മനുഷ്യത്ത്വം തൊട്ട് തീണ്ടിയിട്ടില്ലേ ?

സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളുടെ രണ്ടിന്റേയും കേസ് കോടതിയിലിട്ട് തട്ടിക്കളിക്കുന്ന സുപ്രീം കോടതി എന്ന് പറയുന്ന പരമോന്നത നീതിന്യായ വ്യവസ്ഥയ്ക്ക് പിന്നിലുള്ളത് മനുഷ്യന്മാര്‍ തന്നെയല്ല എന്നുണ്ടോ ? ഇതെന്താ പിടികിട്ടാപ്പുള്ളിയോ, തെളിവില്ലാതെ കിടക്കുന്ന കേസോ മറ്റോ ആണോ ഇങ്ങനെ നീട്ടിനീട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോകാന്‍ ? അടുത്ത ഹിയറിങ്ങ് ഇനി ജനുവരിയിലാണ് പോലും. രണ്ട് കൂട്ടര്‍ക്കും 9 ദിവസം വീ‍തം വേണമത്രേ കേസ് വാദിച്ച് തീര്‍ക്കാന്‍!

ഒന്ന് മാത്രം മനസ്സിലാക്കുക. രാഷ്ട്രീയവും കോടതിയുമൊക്കെ കളിച്ച് കളിച്ച് എന്തെങ്കിലും കുഴപ്പങ്ങള്‍ വരുത്തിവെക്കാനാണ് അധികാരി വര്‍ഗ്ഗത്തിന്റെ ഭാവമെങ്കില്‍ ലോകം കണ്ടതില്‍ വെച്ച് ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഒരു ദുരന്തത്തിനവര്‍ സമാധാനം പറയേണ്ടി വരും. അവരിലൊന്നിനെപ്പോലും റോഡിലിറങ്ങി നടക്കാന്‍ ബാക്കി വരുന്ന കേരളജനത അനുവദിച്ചെന്ന് വരില്ല. പേപ്പട്ടികളെ നേരിടുന്ന ലാഘവത്തോടെ തെരുവില്‍ ജനങ്ങളവരെ കല്ലെറിഞ്ഞുവീഴ്ത്തും. ഉറ്റവനും ഉടയവനും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട് മനസ്സിന്റെ സമനില തെറ്റി നില്‍ക്കേണ്ടി വന്നേക്കാവുന്ന ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് ജനങ്ങളുടെ വികാരത്തിന് മാത്രം വിലപറയരുത്.

Bollywood Boxoffice Update-2012 demolishes all

Destroying both Bollywood and regional language releases in November was Hollywood’s latest disaster movie, 2012. The much-hyped apocalypse movie raked in collections north of Rs. 300 million in its first week. The collections are steady as it moves to its third week in a sure-footed fashion. The distributors expect it to collect close to Rs. 500 million by the time it closes its run in India.

Among the movies which were vanquished by the unstoppable run of 2012 were Tum Mile and Kurbaan. The second week collections of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani was hit as well. Tum Mile which featured Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan was a product of the ever-dependable Bhatt camp while Kurbaan which paired up real-life couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor. Both movies failed to make an impact as the 2012 wave crushed them underneath. Kurbaan received rave reviews from critics, with some hailing it as the most powerful movie of the year. But the reviews don’t seem to have translated into box office collections.

Mahindra Satyam receives legal notices from 37 firms

Mahindra Satyam’s headaches don’t seem to end and the company is finding it difficult to limp back to survival with more legal issues aimed at it almost every week. The most recent one is the heap of legal notices from a total of 37 firms. The firms claim that they had invested money in the company during the tenure of Satyam founder Ramalinga Raju. The sum of the investments is close to Rs.123 million and the companies are demanding it back. Interestingly, the amount is close to the net amount mentioned in Raju’s confession letter.

Mahindra Satyam has responded to the claim by stating that the argument from the end of the 37 firms is shaky and flawed. "The notices demanding the money back to allegedly repay their creditors, some of whom include Maytas Properties and Maytas Infra," Mahindra Satyam reported in the filing. >>

Ratan Tata’s successor may not be from India

We are skeptical about whether or not the world will end in 2012. But we do know that an era will come to a conclusion for the Tata group in the most talked about year. Ratan Tata, the seventy one year old Chairman of the Tata Group will be making way for a successor in 2012. To add to the level of interest is the news that the new specter bearer may be an expatriate. Roll up your sleeves NRI magnates.

"Now we are in the process of formalizing a successor to me. We have some foreign consultants and a formal search process is on. There are no constraints. It would certainly be simple if that candidate was an Indian national. But now that 65 percent of our revenues come from abroad, there could also be an expatriate sitting in that position with justification" ," said Tata, who has been leading the group for nearly two decades.>>

India in 'World's most corrupt nations' list

There aren’t many surprises in this result. India still continues to be one of most corrupt nations in the world. Validating the statement is the Transparency International which has mentioned this fact in its annual corruption perceptions. The high public sector corruption in the country has earned it the 84th rank in the list that no country wishes to be featured in – the list of 'World's most corrupt nations'. An integrity score of 3.4/10 indicates that the country is still far from the status of a corruption-free nation.

May I have some garbage please?, Sustain-o-Bin

When was the last time you stamped mercilessly on the dustbin to open its lid? Or let us make it worse, when was the last time the cleaniliness bug bit you and you desperatly ran in search of a dustbin to dispose off that coke can? Too many instances to remember.
That’s precisely why six geniuses at IIT-Bombay cam up with the most interesting piece of waste disposal ever – an interactive dustbin. At a time when pretty much everything in the house is turning to the interactive mode, it is high time that the dustbin took a similar route. So how does this one work anyway?

Developed by six students from the Industrial Design Centre (IDC) at IIT, Bombay, the interactive dustbin approaches people and requests them to pit trash into it. To top it off, the bin says a polite “Thank you” as well. The design team of Ajay Mittal, Aniket Sarangdhar, Aniruddha Kadam, Mandar Sarnaik, Saurabh Srivastava and Shaswath V have given it a eco-friendly name too - Sustain-o-Bin. The name owes a lot to the materials which went into the construction of the product. Designed and developed as a course project and it was later chosen for an international design conference on sustainability.

The body of the dustbin was made from cardboard boxes and newspapers giving it the bio-degradable status. But don’t let the low-tech body take your eyes off the hi-tech gadgetry which makes it the most attention-grabbing dustbin on the planet. What does the job in the mobility department  is team of three sensors which control the wheels of the bin. The sensors detect the nearest person and directs wheels towards him/her and requests for trash disposal.

It sounds as cool as weird it is to have a dustbin follow you around like a pet. As long as stinking waste is kept away from it,  no one would mind to have a cardboard box accompanying him/her around the house. To make sure that the Sustain-o-Bin doesn’t wander off, the engineers have added a sensor to keep it within a predetermined perimeter. So that’ll be a leash on this unusal pet.
